EVALUATION 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

SCRIPT

Matt - Hi I'm Matt.

Tara - And I'm Tara,

'

Matt - And this is the music video we made for the band Feeder, called Feeling a Moment. The song is taken from their debut album 'Pushing the Senses'.

Tara - Feeder are a band based in the UK, and are quite popular among 15 to 25 year olds. Their music is an indie genre.

Matt - For our band’s image, we wanted to create an indie style music video with the characteristics of an indie video, including certain camera shots, angles and so on.

Tara - This involved research into indie genre music videos and camera angles used, such as close ups of the main singer, shots of instruments, and long shots of the band. We wanted to portray the main singer of the main member of the band, with the most camera angles as opposed to the other band members.

Matt - We had a clear and simple narrative, which we blended with the overlay effect in Final Cut after some feedback. The narrative is of a couple together, and is linked to the lyrics. Our feedback was that it didn't blend too well, so we overlayed the main singer over the top if this footage in Final Cut, which made it appear like the footage was in his thoughts or memories, and we think this blended a lot better.

Tara - I had a band and a singer from the early planning stages, so this really helped in terms of getting a band together for the song, we were really pleased with all the effort put in by each band member, such as learning lyrics and chords - and think this really helped them in terms of performance.

DROP DIGIPAK IN

Tara - Our digipak and magazine advert are also based on our music video, also hoping to create an indie genre music cover for our album after researching 'indie genre' album covers.

Matt - We created a collage of pictures in Photoshop, and used four seperate images of each member of the band, and to show them as the main images, we made them darker than the collage in the background.

Tara - For our additional information, we decided to add an additional booklet and a behind the scenes documentary, as well as the music video for 'Feeling a Moment'.

DROP MAGAZINE ADVERT IN

Tara - For the magazine advert, I did some planning at home, and liked the look of a few templates on Pages so tried these out as practice.

Matt - After looking at magazine adverts, I created 3D CD digipak album covers in After Effects and thought it would be a good idea to use these on the Magazine advert.

Tara - I created two magazine adverts originally, and after researching adverts on the blog, I chose the first one I did which featured a beige background and prominent layout.

Matt - The magazine advert and digipak showed clear links to our music video in terms of visual style and indie genre album covers and mag adverts.

OVERALL...

Tara - Overall, we felt that we achieved what we aimed to, and matched the characteristics, camera angles, and shots of an indie genre music video really well based on our research.

Matt - We think that we promoted the band effectively with the digipak and magazine advert, and we think the music video we made gave the band the correct image that a record company would want to put across.

VOICEOVER AND VIDEO TO BE ADDED FRIDAY.

EVALUATION 3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Here are the pages which explain our evaluation task 3, they are JPEG files so click on the images to enlarge and read the text and see the screengrabs. For our social networking feedback, the screengrab above shows that we have only received one comment of feedback, From Lauren Smith, who is an Manor Community College student, who also does the creative and media diploma, but level 2 as she is at GCSE level. She said she likes the effects used and the way everyone was focused, which is both good.

EVALUATION 4.How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Here is a photo of me with all the technology we used, including a HD camera, a Tripod, a Mac Pro computer, a mouse, a keyboard, and Final Cut Express. Technologies have influenced our project in various ways, and if technologies were not so advanced we would not have been able to create the music video nearly as effectively. If technologies were not so advanced:

- If we didn't have Mac's or any type of computer we would have had to do "Crash Editing" which is using a form of two tapes and cutting from the tapes instead, which no doubt would be harder as we were not used to this editing.

-Because of this we wouldn't have Final Cut Express, so our Video would contain no effects at all, therefore our video will be a lot simpler without all the cross fades.

- if we didn't have the internet we wouldn't of been able to promote our music video on different social networking sites such as facebook/myspace. also we wouldn't of been able to show our video using Youtube or Vimeo. We would have to probably have to pay lots of money to play my music video in public.

-We would also not be able to have the same quality video, as HD cameras would not be made and standard DV cameras would have had to be used.

Below are screengrabs of all the programmes we have used, and explanations of what we used them for.

Here is a screengrab of facebook, which we used to advertise our video and to get views, as a terms of social networking advertising.

Here is a screengrab of Youtube, which we used to post our videos onto and to get views and feedback from industry professionals.

Finally, here is a screengrab of Vimeo, which was another alternative to Youtube. We used this to upload our videos which showed them in better quality than Youtube.

Here is a screengrab of Blogger, which shows the dashboard. This was our main input of research, where we put all of our research work for the music video project to show evidence of research.

Magazine Articles

Here is our First Magazine Adverts. we really like these as it uses the 3D music cover I made.

we thought that these are good, but we are going to bring the .page files into college on friday for any more suggestions.

Digipak in 3d

This is the digipak in 3d, i used after effects.

These images could be used for the magazine advert.

More Editing of the digipak

Here we are editing the text for the back of the CD cover. we tried many different fonts and colours and we decided to choose red but wrap it round the body of the guitarist to make it more clear

Here is the whole digipak with fake booklet in a sleeve

Magazine Articles for digipaks

This advert is for a frank sinatra or rank sinatra as it says in the pictures new album, or old now as it was out millions of years ago.
this advert is quite basic as it only shows the digipak with some text and a massive picture of Frank, and it explains what is in the album with special features.

This magazine advert is similar to the Frank Sinatra Advert because it is just a simple image with with just text advertising his album, which features the digipak, it attracts audiences of Rod Stewart.

Research on Digipaks

For this one its quite a plain image, but its not boring, this is quite similar to what we want as we want a plain design but have it mean something like this has.

For this one they seem to have just taken a few images and placed them on the pack for emphasis, these photos either mean somthing, or are placed there to look pretty.

CD Cover Progress

Today i started work on the Digipack, this was our orgional idea to have a tiled effect for the background of the main cover and use the overlay effect like in our video to show the whole band silhouette, i think this works effetcive, all we have to do now is add some text and think about what we are going to add on the inside

Breif Research on Digipak.

Taken from Wikipedia:

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets.

Because such packaging is less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating

Screenshots of editing

These photos are of us editing for overlapping, showing us adding in the fades and making it all looks smoother.

More feedback from Pete

Today Pete looked t our music video again, and he gave us more suggestions on ways to improve the video:

- He preferred the overlapping for the narrative. as this makes it flow within the performance more.

- The Narrative needs more fades to make the whole video seem smoother, as he thinks that these parts are to choppy.

- He wanted to see the overlapped effect on more shots durning the video over when the singer sings.

finally for the overlapping one piece of footage needs to be more in focus then the other to make one stand out more so the bits not just a blur.

Moodboard - shots of video

This is just a little moodboard of our music video - considering it for the digipak.

DVD Digipak

This is a dvd digipak, this is similar to what we are looking for, it has a nice layout with a few CD's with extras and a booklet on the subject.

Feedback From Junction

We showed our music videos to two people at the junction Rob and Pete, who specialised in gigs, they then fed back to us and suggested ways to improve:

They first said that they really liked the silhouette effects that we had going on, even though the screen was ALOT darker then what i am usually used to seeing, it actually was very effective, and they thought that was the strongest part of the video, even though you couldn't really see the singer

Secondly they thought that the Narrative stuff filmed outside was a little weak, and didn't come off as effective enough and they suggested cutting it out, i personally do not want to do this as then all it will be is a video of a band playing, not nessaserly a music video, maybe there can be a way to slot them in effectively.

They really liked the space we used, saying it was not all the same as everyone elses and that made it unique, large space and a great place to film.

At the end Simon stated that everyones music video was at a high quality end, and said that he may show the finished products to other places if given the permission.

More editing

This is a shot while we where editing

Today we let Nick watch the video, and he told us that it was going good, but it needed to be more choppy, with alot more cuts.

He said we can achive this better with a shorter song, so we faded it out at 3:18 making it about 1 minute shorter.

Feedback on the roughcut

Today we received our rough cut feedback for our music video. The main points were:

- Some shots were still a little too dark (We had not added colour correction to some of the cuts so this can be easily solved)

- Some shots are held for just a little too long (we can easily cut these down, In Pete's opinion if a shot is held for more than 2 seconds there needs to be a valid reason why)

- The song is a bit long, 4 minutes is too long for our certain video and everyone in the class is doing a 2 minute video, so there is no need for us to do a video for 4 minutes, perhaps we can use the shortened version we mentioned earlier in the post below 'shortened song version?' or we could simply cut the music as there is a part in the song where the music fades, perhaps this will be better.

- There needs to be some motion in the shots are some are too static, motion added to these would help them and would go better with the faster pace of the song. (We could easily add motion so this isn't a big problem, and have started to add motion after feedback was given.)

- There needs to be more close ups at the end as there were more at the beginning, it would be better if it were consistent throughout. (We can add close ups to the end and have already started to add these after feedback was received.)

- Pete did not understand the empty hall in the video, but had said he had not listened to the lyrics much, however when he listened again it was clear the shot related to the lyrics and he said this was fine. (As we have explained in planning stages, the lyrics 'How do you feel when there's no one?' and the shot shows an empty hall. Matt and I as a pair thought this shot was relevant and added to the feeling of loneliness we tried to create in the song.)

- Pete said with the narrative, it needs to be clear that the shots are flashbacks, so to add an effect to make this clear and this will be easier for the viewer to understand.
